"The second part of the book contains interesting chapters on the Latin iteratives in (i)tare and the sonants in the Indo-European root, but the most interesting and original in my opinion is the chapter on the Slavic suffix *-d-.
Otkupscikov points out that Slavic formations in *-d- have been sadly neglected by most Slavic comparativists, so he gives many examples of words with *-d- and many new and original etymologies for these words. Thus, for example, the Slavic word bludo is not a borrowing from Germanic but rather reflects the root *bheu- plus suffix *-d-{p. 116). Many examples are given where the *-d-suffix is found in Slavic as opposed to a *-t-suffix elsewhere, e.g. O.C.S. xla-db "cold" but Lith. saltas, O.C.S. tvib-db "hard" but Lith. tvir-tas, etc.""This book is a valuable contribution to the study of Indo-European word formation and is to be recommended for all Slavists and Indo-Europeanists. One may dispute some of the author's conclusions which are highly original (such as the interpretation of Lachmann's law), but the purpose of the book, which was to show the importance of the study of word formation for Indo- European comparative studies, is certainly achieved".
